Yeah that'll happen, a good thing to invest in when leveling your character is path finding. It increases map movement speed, so you can outrun enemies and not get captured early. Banner kings is causing save bloating. I can't find anywhere to share this information with the developer or their community. The one by Ancientwanker for 0.808 is the old one. (it has single money and simple campaign) The 3.x one for 1.033 or so is the new one. (it has per-faction money and is generally way overcomplicated) Expanded Gameplay III is my favorite mod. It doesn't change the base gameplay much except makes everything harder.
Let's share tips and tricks. I'm 500+ hours into this game and I'm still learning new things. I feel like it's helpful for people to share what they have learned because there's no official guide out there that tells you this stuff. Here are my noob tips: Hit the melee arena in town until you level up a bit. Unless you have some odd mod, the damage you take is temporary, and goes away afterwards. You can also talk to the trainer at any training grounds which gets you extra exp, but the arena is handy, and it gives you some easy cash. You’re also taking away a major asset of income and troop replenishment from them. Last reason is that by the time you take the surrounding castles, your troops may be too diminished to the city.
